(The Half-Blood Prince) It's hard to rate films that are just one of a long series. It isn't to be expected that it stands alone. As a Potter film, I'd say it's the best since the third (Prisoner of Azkaban). I've never read the books, and my memory wanes between the films, so I often feel that I'm left grasping for the backstory.

It usually seems to me that most Potter films have the same plot: Harry's stuck at home during the summer and barely makes it to Hogwarts for the school year; there's a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher; they usually turn out to be a baddie, despite initial assurances to the contrary; Harry discovers some strange new object or ability, and learns to cope with it during the film. This film falls pretty much along those lines, but is better done than usual.

I say that mainly because there are a few original and clever plot points, much as there were in HP3. Of course, the grown-up cast is full of fantastic acting, as usual, and the kids are snug in their roles. Daniel Radcliffe seems a bit stiff, as always, but I've learned to accept that's just how Harry is. I guess that's why he's the chosen one; he takes it seriously. He's a bit like little Anakin Skywalker, but not as annoying.

There is plenty of side story to do with the romantic confusion of the youngsters. I personally find that works pretty well. Hermione crying over unrequited love almost makes me want to cry.

That's about it - I'm not going to ruin any major plot points, and there are actually some this time. If you've fallen asleep for the last two, you might want to catch this one, if only so that you're ready for the last two.
