Bolt - Viewed 1002 Times

As a sort of cross between The Truman Show and The Incredible Journey, Bolt is a 3D animated film from Disney about a dog who thinks he has superpowers, because he's kept from knowing he's acting on a TV show. Due to some sort of mishap, he ends up in New York in a box full of styrofoam, and tries to find his way back home, with, of course, a collection of sidekicks.

I'm not a 10-year-old kid, so I can't explain it from that perspective. But as an adult, it was boring. It started out with a bizarre set of generic action scenes, which perhaps was supposed to pique the audience's interest, but led me to wonder whether any of this was going to make any sense.

Thankfully, that's eventually explained, but the plot moves on slowly from there, without any revelatory moments. Bolt gradually learns that he doesn't have superpowers, and accepts it almost sheepishly. While all the cliches bore, the lack of drama bores even more.

Of course, the animation is rendered fantastically, but we're so familiar with such things at this point that it seems nonessential. Instead, I scratch my head at why they bothered to spend hundreds of hours of hard work on detailed rendering of landscapes, when they could have used the real thing more cheaply.

The only reason I enjoyed the experience was that I watched it floating in a public pool. I could always swim a few laps when I got bored.
