Awesome movie, action, fun, high tech, great lines and well developed characters. Ties in the story of how all these guys came together and makes it fun. Not a big fan of the original series, but I am going to enjoy all the new faces in the sequels. (sulu is Harold from H and Kumar)Watched it on a sneak preview, fell in love with it specially the green chick with the red hair and lepard bikini. Overall a great experience.
This is one of those movies where it pays off to see it in the theater just for the reason that the special effects are the best of any of the Star Trek Films to date. I brought a friend of mine with me who never has seen any Star Trek movies, but watched TNG just a little, and he loved the movie overall. Btw, we saw the IMAX version, and I thought the digital presentation was flawless. The sound system in an IMAX theater is really unbelievable. The seats shook at some of the more intense parts in the movie. I give it 9 stars because it has all the things a summer blockbuster movie should have. Action, excitement, drama, special effects, a silly storyline, did I say action? oh and a little mushy mushy too. Go see this movie before it leaves the theater.
I use to watch a lot of star trek. I guess none of the movies are too special though. My favorite is the one with the borg. This one had a lame villain and a so so conflict about time travel and some nonsense about red matter. The young spock and kirk were interesting. I don't get the point of rewrites through time travel or why we need an alternate story about pike and kirk. That guys no shatner. Someone said this is the "Star Wars" of this generation. Whattt?. How so? Star Wars is fantastical, beautiful and artistic. Star Trek is about wearing silly uniforms and talking about science, rarely is star trek visually impressive. And this is just a remake with nothing original except the romulans now have tattoos and stomp in water on their ship. The scores actually pretty good but I was annoyed that they didn't use the old theme until the end.
Okay, I'll admit it--I'm a sci-fi junkie. Starting from birth I enjoyed any and all sci-fi. In the '90s I was one of THOSE people that William Shatner made fun of in a famous SNL sketch. I didn't learn Klingon, but was "in my element" at the conventions--from taking pictures of my favorite ST:TNG people to the autographs to well...buying a tribble... Yeah, they would have really had to have messed up this film for me to not like it.
That being said--it DID surprise me. I actually liked it MORE than I thought I would. The characters were well played considering most of the cast weren't Trekkies to begin with. The potential of future movies is evident with the way this movie was done. And seeing Sylar as Spock--that alone was worth the money! LOL :c)
Okay, so my review may not be totally fair and impartial since I'm already a fan. So, take this into account... My mother went with me (who NEVER watches sci-fi; her idea of TV is CSI, Walker Texas Ranger, etc. and she doesn't go to the movies much). During the movie, she was on the edge of her seat and covered her eyes a couple of times at the more "intense" scenes (not to give anything away). Leaving the theatre she talked about how much she liked it. That, people, came from an EXTREMELY impartial critic.

Especially good for non-trekkies
Good action pic for people not caught up in previous character depictions. We enjoyed Kirk's character introspection, but found Spock's character not believable (again, seen too many old Spocks). Kirk was totally believable, especially with his "I don't believe in unwinable scenarios" line. All in all, We'd recommend it to both trekkies and newbies alike.
I'm going to start with the positive. I appreciate them bringing back the original characters, because it gets a little tiring with all the spin-offs. Although time travel is overused in Star Trek, it frames the world in such a way that we can see the same characters without already knowing how things are going to turn out. The actors did a fine job finding the essence of their characters, especially Pine as Kirk and Urban as McCoy.
I'm not sure what to make of Spock. He's not quite like the original character, but he's interesting. The original Spock started out logical and reserved and grew to embrace his emotions over time. The new Spock starts out more conflicted, and easily lets his emotion go. I like that despite getting emotional, he's still put forth as very perceptive. He knows when Kirk is trying to pull one over on him, but loses control of himself anyway.
Now for the down side. I suppose it can't be helped in an origin film, but there are too many stories to tell. I wish they had waited until the next film to introduce some of the characters, instead of coincidentally having them all meeting at once. There are many coincidences in the plot, which can only be explained away as "the timeline trying to heal itself".
The action is too dense. Sorry, maybe you're a Vin Diesel fan, but I'm a little more patient. I'd like to see things unfold more slowly, with more time to see the actors' feelings in their faces, and more time to look in awe at the grandness of space. Star Trek: The Motion Picture was too slow, but The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country had it just right. The screenwriters are well-versed in Khan, and though they made homages to it in this film, they missed out on the majestic pacing that made it special.
I'm looking forward with the next film, when the writers can be free of worrying about origins, and focus on a singular story. Oh, and two more things: a Spock/Uhura romance sounds like a good idea, and is believable in principle, but it played out as creepy. And please, please can the Jar-Jar-like sidekick of Scotty.

I gave this 9 stars just because I have to get used to the new cast. I enjoyed the originally televised series years ago. The Movie is a must see, but my friends and I were however disappointed when the famous "one liners" were spoken, and no one reacted to them as we did(and a handful of other people did as well). The majority of the crowd had no reaction to it. :(
Other than that, the special effects are as so real, its incredible. Also, they got the origins of each character down to the teeth (accent and all) and like another reviewer mentioned, it will be interesting how this time line of Star Trek plays out.
I would recommend to watch just a couple of episodes from the original series, before going to see this movie (doesnt matter which eps, just a couple).
Not a big fan of this at the movies or on tv (although watched it a bit on tv).
This movie is suprisingly good, keeps you interested throughout. Good characters and story.
Couldn't make it to the event to see it w/ the MeetIn group! *Sniff* *Sniff*! LOL! However, went to see it the same day! Really Impressed seeing it at the IMAX at Dole Cannery! The Sound & Picture quality were well worth the bucks! The action and humor hit high marks! Zada Pickett-Jones was Smokin HOT! OMG! She looked Fricken GREAT! Could only dream of looking that good! LOL!
For die hard Trek fans this movie is a treasure trove that does not disappoint even after three screenings (who, moi?). For general science fiction fans, what's not to like? And for everybody else this movie is a fun popcorn muncher with lots of smart characters, great special effects and editing, and an adventurous and exciting pace you're sure to enjoy (or at least feel like your money was not wasted). People I know who NEVER got into the series enjoyed this release. To me that's the ultimate testimonial. J. J. ABRAMS did something right. Can't figure out why I don't go all the way to 10 Stars. I guess I just have to get used to the new cast and timeline and see how this plays out with future installments.
This was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time, I'm going to see it again in the theater! You should know a little about the original series but, it's still good even if you don't.
If you enjoyed the original GENE RODDENBERRY'STAR trek characters you must see this New: STAR TREK movie- how (kirk, spock, scotty, uhara, chekov, mccoy and sulu they all met at star fleet
