Learning a 2nd/3rd/4th language
This is a post to find out if there is any interest and to learn if we have any teachers.
I speak French very poorly. I'd like to learn to speak it better and one day travel to the Provence region.
It'd be great to learn Spanish and Italian, as well.
So my question: any interest in having some languages classes and anyone willing to teach? Ideally these would be free and meet at least weekly.
If you respond here, please share which language you'd like to learn and/or teach, a suggested meeting place, and best day of week for you.
Merci beaucoup,
Patty

languages!
Like Susan I'm relatively fluent in ASL, I can also get by in Spanish. It would be great to find places to get together and practice (at whatever level) in these languages.
For more advanced signers there are at least two local Deaf get-togethers I know of, one on the second Friday night of the month at the Starbucks near the Fred Meyer in Beaverton between Beav-Hllsdl and Canyon, the other on the third Saturday of the month in rotating locations. Let me know if you'd like more info about those.

sure
Monday and Tuesday do often work for me... my evening schedule varies based on my clients. Based on timing and location, I may also try to make both on some nights.

Bad nights
I work part-time on Wednesday nights and my Thursday nights are booked, too.
I work 8-5 in Milwaukie.
Monday and Tuesday nights in general are good for me.
Thanks!

meeting day/time
Is there a particular day of the week that will work better for everyone?
Time?

yay!
I always wanted to learn ASL. I used to work with autistic children, and I picked a little bit up...
I used to know a little bit of French and even less Spanish. And fifteen words of Italian, Greek, Russian, Chinese, Indonesian, and Thai... just enough to get into trouble. For some reason, I think it would be fun to learn (and re-learn) a few useful phrases in a variety of languages. Hello, thank you, where's the bathroom, don't shoot me, what a lovely dress, where is the best Indian restaurant, who does your hair, etc.
Fat Straw might be a good place - the back room has a smallish table. Or Costello's Travel Caffe (sic) - they're a language-happy bunch.

Yes! Oui! Si!
Excellent, we have interest! Convo groups is a great idea. And Susan, ASL = yes, another great language. Maybe some cafes would let us use their facilities for a coffee "chat" hour.
Ideas welcomed!

Conversational group?
I know other organizations have conversational groups, where speakers of different levels get together and just try to talk in whatever language the group has formed around. I personally would greatly enjoy something like this to work on my French. And having a conversation group where everyone learns from each other might help spread responsibility instead of one or two people feeling like they are taking on a huge responsibility by agreeing to be the teacher. But no matter what form it's in, I'd jump at a chance to work on my French. :)
