Event DetailsJoin my in taking in some of Portland's true culture! The Back Door Theater, located behind Common Grounds Coffee shop on SE Hawthorn, is one of my favorite places to see a play. It's a tiny theater that seats about 30 people! The productions & stage design here have to be creative! I'm limiting this event to 12 people 'cause that's 1/3 the audience already! It's also flake intolerant because I have to make a reservation for tickets in advance. YOU WILL HAVE TO BRING CASH TO PAY FOR YOUR TICKET(S) AT THE DOOR/WILL CALL. They don't do credit or ATM cards. The play will start PROMPTLY at 8:00 pm. So we'll meet at 7:30 to buy the tickets. Here's a little about the play: Joseph Heller’s first play, “We Bombed in New Haven,” from 1967 in response to the Vietnam war, has endured over the decades as a highly durable anti-war piece, acerbically funny and full of agitprop trappings that may be dated but still pack a punch. Currently presented by Third Eye Theatre, the piece follows the movements of a group of airmen set to go out on a mission to bomb Constantinople (now Istanbul), and later Minnesota, with no reason at all given for these orders from a pompous major (Chandler Adams). Caught in the middle is Captain Starkey (Simeon Denk), a more mild-mannered yet code-bound officer who gathers the men in the briefing room ready for their mission. One aviator is destined to die: It’s in the script of the play, which the major constantly carries with him. And there’s no messing with the script. So is this a group of U.S. servicemen, or a cluster of actors playing them? Did the corporal bound for death during the first “raid” actually die? He’s not around, and when everyone searches, there’s no sign of him. We’re led to believe in both levels of reality as these borders blend and blur. -It's always fun to see how Third Eye Theater group pulls this off in this venue. |
