Homewood Cemetery

Okay, so I like cemeteries. It's not a Halloween, scary thing. It's more about the art, the names, the history, nature. At the bigger cemeteries around Pittsburgh, you can add ostentation to that list. I've wandered the Allegheny County Cemetery on numerous occasions, usually around this time of year for the addition of the fall colors, but I had never been through Homewood. The weather channel had indicated it would be a gorgeous day; I couldn't pass it up!

I was joined by Monika and Mayura in a very informal "hike" around the cemetery grounds. We weren't disappointed - by they colors, the weather or the art, history and immense ostentation. Obelisks and pyramids vied with more traditional angels and artwork. It was an interesting way to spend a beautiful evening.

and the next day......
I did go back and spent 3 hours snapping dozens of photos. I was mostly all alone the whole time, it was just as beautiful an evening as it was the day before. I got a map and a self guided tour flier from the office, the lady there was trying to sell me a plot! I found Heinz, Frick and Mellon all in sec 14, its the one that the pyramid is in. Kim thanks for that it was a memorable event. I am going back there for sure.

Monika
Helen you crack me up!
Too funny. It was a great time - also my first time there, but now I will have to go back and find Andrew Carnegie's grave.

Helen
Wait....
Who took this photo if there were only three of you on the hike? The main shot is apparently taken from the ground up...c-r-e-e-p-y!

Carol
hmmmm....
Despite what you said, "It's not a Halloween, scary thing," I did note the Hitchcock-ian touch to the last few photos! ;-) I like cemetery settings, too.

Frank
I'm jealous
Homewood Cemetery is one of the Hidden wonders of the burgh. Andrew Carnegie is buried there. Great place to do a photo tour.
