Where The Boys Are: British Invasion Dance Party Written By Colleen 01/04/2009 click for full size
“Sahside calling to the faraway tahns
Now war is declared - and battle come dahn Sahside calling to the underworld…..” “The Clash” Francine and I entered the Lava Lounge promptly at 10:00pm only to find a vacant venue. We quickly got beers and headed for the cavernous back dance area. It was freezing and dark. I told Francine that in a half hour, this place will be like volcano lava: hot, smokey, and loud. Barb, my lovely co-host showed up after us and then the birds from “Girl’s Night Out” came in followed by the MEEPS that went to see “Office Space.” The only group that was missing was the mysterious blokes from the “Boy’s Night Out” letting us know who was in charge. I must admit, I thought the joke was going to be on us and they wouldn’t show. I impatiently texted a half dozen of the guys only to get messages like, “we are drinking.” When the bloke’s finally entered, it was evident that MEETin once again took over the Lounge, front and back. The downside: The wait staff was very friendly and fast but sadly there are only two girls working the bar. The theme was, “British Dance Party” with Bobby LaMonde as our DJ. Bobby was hard to miss because he was dressed like Robert Smith of the Cure. He was approachable and kindly accepted requests from the crowd. Pete was in da haus representing Britain. A few tunes to mention were: Morrissey’s Suedehead, my very own favorite and my own request, which I missed most of since I was in the front room when it started. We heard a few Clash tunes, Adam Ant, The Smiths, Depeche Mode and newer songs from Amy Winehouse. Bobby always spins the mandatory Bowie, Stones and Rod Stewart classics too. One of the many highpoints for me: One of the two transgendered/transsexuals that were dressed very girlish requested a hit from the Rocky Horror Picture Show ,“Sweet Transvestite, from Transsexual, Transylvania” and the song took on a whole new meaning. It was wonderful seeing Ross kicking it again on the dance floor. I think Leslie, Suhail and Alene danced the entire time. It was wonderful seeing so many new and newer members for all of these events too. (Some new and newer members to give a shout out to: Maureen, Mo, Mona, Eric and Shelle) Of course, the usual suspects were in attendance too. The specials were: $4.00 Cosmopolitans and $1.50 Pabst Pints. I know a lot of the MEEPS from GNO enjoyed a few Cosmo’s. Special thanks to Dawn, Amy and Kat for the pictures. Please feel free to send me others so I can post them. Until the next dance party; Cheerio from jolly ole Sahside. More Photos
