Open House New York Weekend Written By Glenn 10/07/2007 click for full size On Sunday, it was Manhattan day. We first went to the Mount Vernon Hotel, a building from the 1700's in the shadows of the Roosevelt Island Tram. People went there for a day in the country, as the city ended at 14th st. Then we checked out the Lilac, a steam-powered boat from the 1930's. We were able to go all over the ship, including the engine room and Captain's Quarters. Finally, we went to an art installation at the Essex St Market. The artist took an abandoned building, changed very little and called it art. He did go to the trouble of trucking in tons on sand for one room, though. We don't know why. The volunteer we asked said that it was meant to make us feel uncomfortable. In that, it was a success.
