Brush with Greatness
Sunday, October 31, 2004 @ 5:00pm, 8th Street between 5th and 6th, I saw MICHAEL STIPE himself using his cell phone outside a restaurant. I kept looking at him with awe. No one else seemed to notice. Anyone else with celebrity sightings? -mm

I once saw Rihanna too at a hairdresser.
I didn't know her music then so I didn't know to tell ppl. After she left, the hairdresser complained that she needed to get her account straightened up. She had gorgeous blonde hair with bangs... the hairdresser said that if only she had been current on her payments, she'd have a better job done on that blonde wig.

A couple of local political VIPs
Today at Red Hook park, I saw Sen. Chuck Schumer and Brooklyn borough prez Marty Markowitz. They were there to mark the opening weekend of the Latin American food vendors at Red Hook park. There were also news teams from Channel 7 and 11 and I think NY1 and the spanish channels as well. One cameraman lingered a while at our table since we ordered so much food that he must have found the spread to be fascinating...so there may be a chance I might be on TV tonight :-)

NY Governor David Paterson
Sunday, June 22, approximately 9:30am, Central Park.
The first time I saw him, he was taking a drink at the water station at Mile 4. I ran past him. Then at the finish line, I saw paparazzi, with their cameras and microphones drawn. Darn, I thought. They probably want to know more about the rumors about a possible RAM reunion and I didn’t prepare a statement. Just when I was about to confront them, I saw the governor cross a special blue ribbon finish line. He came up from behind and overtook me.

Busy week
Ok, so it was a busy week for me (last week) and that I have never seen a celebrity in NYC (or maybe I haven't been Looking). Anyway, I was walking back to work from Starbucks and I walked right past Kyra Sedgewick who was looking oh so chic. Then, later I was skiing with a friend and saw Ben and Frankie from "Make Me a Supermodel" on Bravo. Some wouldn't say they are celebrities, but they are on TV, aren't they?

Went to the Food Network Sweet Event on Friday night and at the Bracco Wine table, she took my hand, asked my name and said "What can I get for you Steve?"
As she is just getting started in the wine business she was trying to make an impression on people.
It must have worked, the following night I went to my local liquor store looking for a bottle of Bracco Pino Grigio to serve with dinner.

1. Mason Reese aka the "Underwood Deviled Ham Kid", whom I saw leaning against a lightpole on Fifth Ave last year. He looked sad and almost pathetic as no one was approaching his table. I was thisclose to asking for an autograph out of pity but my almost empty wallet (spent my change on admission to this thing) prevented that from happening.
2. Model Joanna Krupa. Remember that song from Sesame Street..."One of these things is not like the other..."? It played in my head everytime I passed her table. She was like Marilyn Munster come to life.
3. Pro wrestlers Greg "The Hammer" Valentine and Sandman.
4. Melody Anderson, who's best known for her role in the cheesily awful film adaptation of "Flash Gordon". According to Wikipedia, she's now a social worker and living here in the city. She hasn't aged too well.
5. Speaking of folks who haven't aged too well...poor Raj from "What's Happening" (aka Ernest Thomas) looked sickly. With matted, uncombed hair and wearing a track suit, it looked he either just rolled out of bed or he's fighting off some sort of illness. But at the very least, at least he, Dwayne and little Dee are still with us as all the heavyset cast members (Rerun, Mama and Shirley) are all deceased.

I paid the cashier, a woman, behind the counter, for my food. It was a take out place. She gave me back some bills. The change she held on to and dangled over the "tip jar." She said "Change for the tip jar?" I said no that's OK and grabbed it. How annoying was that!?

While most of you seem to bump into the A-list crowd, leave it to me to encounter the Z-listers. Personally though, I thought this was more thrilling to me than seeing the kid who was the spokesperson for deviled ham in a series of famous of '70s commercials leaning against a lamppost on Fifth Ave. a couple of years ago :-p
This was at the Alice Cooper concert...see the current cover photo of this site. This blond-haired lady seemed to be a big deal as people were pointing at her and a couple of them were having their pictures taken with her. Someone screamed out her name and I realized it was Doro (Pesch). I vaguely recalled seeing her on MTV and the (now defunct) Box years back, so I did recognize her. Good thing too as lord knows I have no recollection what her songs sound like. Doro may be an obscure celebrity but she's a celebrity nonetheless...hell, she even has an entry on Wikipedia-

She was in my samba class this evening. She was right behind me in the line of dance. Move those hips, Tyra!!! She was with a friend who could samba better than her. She is thinner than in the pictures. First I thought it was Whitney Houston, because her eyes are so eyecatching, sorry for the unintended pun!
We were all really cool about it, after all, just because she has a pretty face, it doesn't mean that she is any more special than we are. Some one asked her for an autograph after class, to which she politely declined.
So there is my first brush with greatness!!!

I worked at the Waldorf once years ago and was in an elevator with Michael Jackson and another guy who looked like he might be body guard. I was in the elevator when they entered. We couldn't show that we were excited about celebrities or anything like that so I had to psych myself not to get excited - I pretended he was a Michael Jackson impersonator and that worked too well - I was not excited at all, when I got back to my collegues I said "oh I was in the elevator with michael jackson" and one of the guys said "oh yeah, he's staying in the ***(an area of the hotel)"

This happened to my friend Bunny (some of you met her at June's openbar/karaoke)
She was sitting in a bar and this older guy starts talking to her.
She tells him he looks like Bruce Willis but the way he looked a couple of years ago before he got fat.
He insisted he was Bruce Willis.
She found out a couple of days later from the bartender that it was indeed Willis she was talking to.

and perhaps Patty and Jay, but last night, after most of you cleared out of Ping Pong and Billiards night at Fat Cat, (great event BTW -- thank you Mimi!), I noticed that jazz veteran and fellow Pittsburgh expatriate David Budway was playing with the band. We have a couple friends in common back home so I went over to chat with him for a few minutes while they were on break -- I'm hoping to catch him on purpose next time; I think he's got a regular gig on the UES... In the meantime, there's MySpace :)

Walking from work to HH yesterday, I saw that kid who starred in a series of commericials for Underwood Deviled Ham back in the 70s. His name is Mason Reese. He's no kid anymore, but is still as short as one, though he can't be considered a little person. Mason's sort of the white version of Webster.

The strawberry gelato is to die for, anyway, its a small place and when we were seated she briefly looked up from her menu and there he was, golden tan, olive green business suit, killer white smile and as gracious as he is on Oprah. Union Square Park
Friday (6/9), after getting off work, I walked down to Union Square. I passed by the dog run and saw the voice of Apu of Quickie Mart himself, Hank Azaria (currently in town starring in Spamalot). He was sitting on one of the benches alternately texting feverishly on his cell phone and petting a basset hound (probably wasn't his, it seemed to belong to one of the two friends he was hanging out at the dog run with).

New member here. Last week I was looking for a New York Sports Club location that I hadn't used in the past, near 76th and Broadway. I couldn't find it at all, so I decided to ask a couple who was standing nearby, talking to what appeared to be their son. I approached them and said, "Do you live in the area?" They both said yes, and as I turned to look at the woman, I noticed that she was Frances McDormand!!!!!!!! I like to think I remained unphased a she gave me directions to an entirely different club. But who was I to question one of my top 3 favorite actresses? So I just smiled and thanked her and walked on.

Virgin Megastore Union Square - I was on my way out of the store when I saw this real cute girl walk by. When I looked behind her to see who she was with, I saw that it was Keifer Sutherland. He was about my height, kinda grungy looking, wearing a red T-shirt. DMC of Run DMC
Thursday, April 27 - Midtown, 46th Street and Broadway approximately 1:30pm.
I LOVE Run DMC. In their records DMC stood for either Devastating Mind Control and/or (never) Dirty, Mostly Clean, either way I'm glad I passed by him. That was the third time I saw him in person. The first time was at a concert in college, the second time at a concert here in NYC.
I'm a big fan of Run-DMC. In high school there were only 4 bands that mattered to me: The Beatles, The Stones, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. Run DMC however, was the one rap group I liked just as much as the other bands.
First of all, I felt cool listening to them. The kids in my high school did and I felt like one of the gang. It felt great to like contemporary music, the classic rock bands I mentioned above reached their peak 20 years before. Also, though they're an inner city (from Hollis, Queens) rap group, they have heavy metal sensibilities. Just listen to the power chords and metal solos on "Rockbox," "King of Rock," and "Raising Hell." It wasn't like they were conscious about it too, like they're trying to reach a wider (white) audience, they just did it because it sounded great. Talk about taking risks. They were rap/metal a generation before Kid Rock, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit and all those other bands came around. I thought they were bad (meaning good, not bad meaning they stink). I fell for them, complete with the gold chains, kangol hats, unlaced adidas, hook line and sinker.

Whilst walking through Soho on my way to Union Square a couple of weeks ago after work, I noticed a short man dressed in a dark blue overcoat walking by me in the opposite direction. The face looked very familiar but it took awhile for the name to register. It turned out to be Chris Burke, who made network TV history over a decade ago when he became the first actor with downs syndrome to have a lead role in a TV series, whose name escapes me at the moment.

I used to buy sandwiches from there back in the 90s. A few times, they were prepared and served by Rupert himself. I thought he was an OK, laid-back guy, much like his appearances on Letterman. I should make a return visit there sometime.
Too bad Rupert doesn't dress up in disguise and go into dining establishments and annoy staff with stupid questions (that Dave, hidden in a van parked nearby, would tell him on a walkie talkie to say to the waiter/cashier when ordering food). Heard it was because Rupert was getting physical threats. That McDonalds sketch was classic- "I'll have a quarter pounder, a half-pounder, a three-quarter pounder, a pounder and a two and a half-pounder. On second thought, make that a five-pounder, please". Hope there's a link to that sketch and other "Rupert in disguise" sketches on the web somewhere.

Went to the Keith Urban concert last night at Irving Plaza. It was awesome! Afterwards we went over to Rodeo Bar, and there was LeeAnn Womack. She had just finished a show there and we said hello and took my friends pic with her. It was a free show b/c there is never a cover at Rodeo Bar and not really publicized, so it wasn't too crowded. I'm sure it was great and I'm glad we ran into her.

Friday, October 7, 2:15pm
Porn Star Jesse Jane and some other blond actress were in the basement of the Virgin Megastore in Midtown promoting their new release "Pirates" (watch them follow the "treasure trail", while looking for "Pirates' booty"). I didn't have my camera with me but I did get a handshake and an autographed movie poster.
The line was about 10 minutes long. There were mostly guys there waiting to get their Special Edition, 3 hour DVD signed, a couple of girls, and a 10 year old girl with her mom, ready with her camera.

recent sightings
i recently saw those guys from the movie White Chicks-the Waynan brothers? can't remember their names..(funny movie though). they were coming out of Equino at the AOL TimeWarner building. and a few days later saw the guy who played Kumar (can't remember his name either)in Harold and Kumar go to White Castle. Same area-he was coming out the mall of the AOL building as I was going in to go to Whole Food Markets. AND last night at Jamba Juice in Chelsea, I saw one of the guys from the show Queer As Folk.

Walking around the Big Giant 9 in front of my workplace. Who did I see sauntering down but Mister Rocky Horror himself Tim Curry.. he was looking all raggedy with a belly that was ready to play Santa Claus and I said "hey Tim, would you sign my chest for me?" and he just raised and eyebrow and kept walking.
I liked him as the Linguistic Professor in Oscar.

I saw HIM again!
Maybe I should avoid hanging around Union Square Park. I went there yesterday and stopped to watch the dogs at the dog run on my way to Barnes and Noble. I face north and answer my cell phone when guess who is walking towards me? None other than the turnstile ranter himself, the subject of the song I wrote and performed at Ottos. I quickly turned around before he noticed me. 3 times in a 2-week span. Not good.
Hey MM, who ya calling overrated? Them's fighting words. The Cars' first album is a classic great, the next 2 were good as well and Shake It Up isn't bad either. Yeah, they sold out by the time Heartbeat City came out, not a fan of that album at all. I should lend you my DVD of the Cars performing live on German TV from 1979, you'll see just how good a band they were.

Last night, at approximately 7:30, after dropping off DVDs at TLA video on 8th Street, I looked to my left and noticed, standing in front of the old Electric Ladyland Studios, the lead singer of one of the most overrated band in rock history, Mr. Paulina Porizkova himself: RIC OCASEK. He was just chillin' there, smoking a cigarette, wearing a jacket in 85 degree weather. OK, maybe they're not that bad. I do like "Bye Bye Love", and "Shake It Up".

I was staying at a hotel in the theater district the other week, meaning I have to take the subway to and from the office. I got out of the 50th Street Station (at 8th Ave), was waiting for the light to turn when I notice woman dressed in the cutest outfit. As we passed after the light turn, I finally looked at her face and was having the "where do I know this woman from?" thoughts. It finally hit me who it was after she was lost in the crowd.
What was really cool I had ticket for Sweet Charity the following week!

I met ROSA PARKS twice. Once in high school when my friend Mike and I won an award for putting together a comic book biography of Alexander Hamilton (he wrote, I drew). The second time was in college when she attended a play opening and I was taking pictures for our school paper.

Bill seems to be very easy. I met him last year on East 66th between Park and Madison. I came back from jogging in Central Park and basically ran over his front body guard (I was looking elsewhere). The guy said something and I had to take my earphones out and shouted back "What?". This was when Bill laughed out loud and started a short talk with me. Too bad he had to deliver his speech at this fundraiser there, so the small talk didn't last that long. I was actually surprised how tall he is. And no, he doesn't run in CP and doesn't want to.

Don King look-alike
A couple of weeks back, Sonia and I spotted the Reverend Al Sharpton! I practically yanked Sonia's arm off while running to get in front off him. I stopped suddenly in my tracks when I realized that it would be dumb to run up in front of him to say hi. Instead I called out his name, he turned around, waved hi and Sonia and I started giggling like two school girls. I don't know why at that momemt I was so star-strucked with Rev. Al - We still laugh about it to this day ;o)

I walked out of my office building the other day and pushed through a group of tourists blocking the sidewalk that were obviously looking at something. When I looked over, they were taking pictures of ROD STEWART. I was like 6-8 feet away and he is better looking in person. Never thought he looked that great on TV but in person he's not so bad.

Me and Jennifer went to Tea & Tea on Mott St. after veggie dim sum. As soon as we entered the place, I spotted comedian/actor Hal Sparks (Talk Soup, Queer As Folk, VH1 pop culture commentator) sitting 2 tables away with a party of four. As they left the table, he gave a big smooch to this really hot looking blonde whom I'm assuming is his girlfriend, which pretty much answers one lingering question I've always had about the guy (considering he's on Queer As Folk).

My most recent brush
Went to a taping of Carson Daly a couple of weeks back. They taped a couple of segments for their new year's eve broadcast (which I forgot to tape, dag nabbit) on the promenade leading to the rink at Rockefeller Center (with the Christmas tree being used as a backdrop). Avril Lavigne performed 3 songs and Adam Sandler chatted briefly with Carson. As he left the stage, I was standing in front of a metal barrier where the stage exit was, so I wound up shaking his hand.

Everyone sharing their story so let me tell you about one of mine.
I was working on the movie staring Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn. On first day of shooting around 7am in the morning i was at the breakfast table thinking what to eat, and i heard some woman's voice asking me if i can pass her the bagel basket, as i was passing the bagels i looked up and it was Nicole Kidman. I was like wow the star of the movie nicole freaking kidman wowwww!
So she look through the basket she asked me if these bagels are any good, i told her they are alright. she smiled picked up a bagel said thank you and walked away.

Even though most on this site would rather have their hand chopped off before shaking his hand ... I had the honor of shaking President Bush's hand during a campaign rally. I went to a campaign event in Michigan back in 2000 when he was running in the republican primaries. I got there early, got a nice spot in front, and shook his hand when he came out. It was great! :)

A real brush...
Well, it seems to me that some people here aren't responding to the original question. I mean, you were asked about a *brush* with greatness. How many of you actually did that?
I've to say mine came during my undergrad years. My bro and I were really into politics -- he still is cuz of work...me, not so much, due to time -- and we went to help set up a Hillary rally when she came upstate during her first campaign. My bro got a real good picture with her but as hard as I tried, I just couldn't get a handshake from her. (Chelsea did have a good handshake and I wasn't such a fan of Ben Affleck to try to get in front of those screaming girls.) The closest I got to Hillary was when my hand brushed across part of her sweater. Well, I guess not many people could claim to have done that.
So people, stay on topic!

I played beer pong with Kathryn at The Big Easy on the Upper East Side last night. And at the table next to us was Frank, from the Real World Las Vegas. On Thursday, November 11 @ 6:15pm at Shun Lee West Restaurant in the Upper West Side, my co-workers and I were seated in a center table and found ourselves sitting next to TOM CRUISE and STEVEN SPIELBERG and company (of about 10 including kids). That explained the table full of guys looking like bodyguards sitting next to them. I didn't see what they were eating, but Tom Cruise held court, laughing and telling jokes (hey, that's a good idea!). On our left by the way, my co-worker pointed out was Sharon Stone's ex-husband. * sold a bag of popcorn to Katie Couric which she bought for one of her daughters (same circus, different year).
* rode the media elevator with countless WWF wrestlers, some Knick players and broadcast legend Marv Albert.

Movie premiere
One time I volunteered at a movie premiere and had a chance to rip the ticket stubs of the following: Michael Stipe (yup, the first time- he produced the movie)and David Byrne of the Talking Heads. Ethan Hawke came in with his hands full of popcorn and soda. My friend didn't recognize him and asked him for his ticket. I told him, it's OK, really, just let him in.

i met couple of them in vegas for an after party for phat farm, it was great, beyonce, usher. and i was sitting next to LL cool j on the flight back to newyork and played chess with him.

i went to see "nine" on b/way last fall, and after waiting across the street for him to come out of the stage door (there were already mobs on the same side of the street), i caught a glimpse of him before he got into his car and drove off down the street....so my friend was joking around about running after his car, which i took seriously, and ran down the street...the car was stopped at a red light, and there was alreay another couple at the window...his window was down all the way, he had a huge smile on his face, and i gushed about how great the show was, touched his arm...and then he drove off into the sunset...(and yes this is all true...i have a witness ;) )

Goldie, Kurt, Kate and Family
I go to this EV restaurent and Bar on sundays and it's their fav haunt. They generally come with the little one and the Nanny et. all. They are friends with the owner.

celebrity sighting
these haven't been recent, but b4 i moved to ny, when i would visit, i would always stay at the Rhiga Royal Hotel on W.54th. saw lots of them there. rode in the elevator with Amy Grant and Vince Gill,BBall star Sprewell, jackie joyner,and saw in the lobby Tony Danza,Jamie Foxx,Ray Romano,Leah Thompson, and Bryant Gumbel. oh and lil bow wow.

Minnie Driver
A few weeks ago, Minnie Driver walked right past me. She was talking on her cell phone and I could hear her accent as she was walking past. It was in the West village, near 6th and bleeker. I couldn't believe it was her, since I just saw Good Will Hunting the weekend before on tv! My eyes followed her as she walked by, and then I turned to the guy next me (who I didn't know) and asked him if that was indeed Minnie Driver. And he just kind of shrugged his shoulders, said he didn't know who she is, and kept on walking in his own little world.
I also met Donald Trump, Kwame Jackson from last year's Apprentice, and the one black guy from the first couple seasons of ER (at a salsa class).

Yesterday working on a commercial near the Waldorf i was running to get something and i ran right into Sharon stone, who was coming out of the hotel. She is the sweetest person ever, i almost knocked her down and she asked me if i was alright.

Stacy from the Apprentice works at my lawfirm. My mouth almost dropped to the floor when I saw her come back to work last week. Now that was exciting for me!:)
I also said Hi to Donald Trump as I was walking across Park Avenue earlier this year along with twenty other fans. That was EVEN more exciting!
Alas, I saw Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher walking down the street but I can't mark my word on that. I just remember walking out of Ann Taylor's Loft and looking up to see a thin tall Ashton Kutcher. I was like "Oh my God!" and as I quickly looked down to see who he was with, the lady swung her long black hair to cover her face and if it was really Demi Moore, she is really tiny in person.

leslie stahl from 60 minutes
2 or 3 times a week i see her sitting in the starbucks on the corner of 59th and 9th as i head to work. she always looks to be going over work notes or something. i have also seen montel williams sitting in an escalade outside the same starbucks a couple of times while i assume someone is going inside to get his coffee for him. funny that i saw him once before inline at starbucks in LaGuardia airport.
