If anyone is interested in seeing the movie tonight, I switched the meet up time to 8:15 for the 8:40 show. I'll be in the front wearing a yellow Angry Doug shoulder bag. See yas, MM

Return to the Fat Black
Thanks to everyone who came out to the Fat Black last night. I'm still feeling the after effects of it a bit. We should try and come back here at least on a monthly basis.
I would also like to say a hearty "welcome back" to Laia, who's visiting us all the way from Barcelona.
I have never taken advantage of this before even though I have been in NY for 65 years.
Any recommendations of restaurants?
This would be a great opportunity to host events at places that cost an arm and a leg.
Sweet and Vicious was fun last night. I think I'm going to change the 7/15 happy hour to PD O'Hurley. It all depends on the weather. Will keep you posted. -MM
Thanks to everyone who showed up at Sweet and Vicious last Wednesday. I think I'm going to change next month's venue to there. I like the patio. Dinner was fun also, Congee Village is never boring.

Remeber Rattle 'N' Hum?
That place in Midtown Danielle took us to, w/ like 1,000 beers and a kitchen? I so wanted to go back there but it's now too popular to have a decent HH offering. They end at 6 pm. 6 pm!
Thanks to everyone who showed up last night, we had a good time. The place was a little loud, but I loved the classic rock vibe. Dinner was at Sushi Lounge on 8th and A, where we had half price sushi. Service sucked but where else can you get $2 California rolls and $3 after 10pm Martinis.
Yes, Sweet and Vicious is still open (you gotta confirm these days, you never know what's going to close next). For dinner, may I suggest Congee Village around the corner?
I'm quite sure the germans are not the only ones to use 14. 03. for March 14 ... anyway, 22. of July is just as correct. And how about the third of January at 4:15? If you're looking for a reason to celebrate, you'll find one.
Besides, the egyptians used π = 3 for their calculations and their pyramids still stand. But this leads directly to the Trinity ... mine field.
All this pie and numbers and square roots make me think of something other than what Paris Hilton is doing and which celebrities are having babies. U guys almost made me smart. Thank God U failed.
[goes to a gossip website]
Square Head day maybe? But that's October 03 ...
And 3.3 09 is rather square day and only in a certain notion.
As for Steve's π day: July 22 sits much better with my calendar notation than March 3, although the latter has the numbers written out more evidently. And just for the record, 3.14 is also "just" and approximation for π and only two digits more accurate than the egyptian version of π.
Thanks to everyone who came out last night to Hoboken for steaks (and burgers and fish). It was worth it despite the 1 hour wait. May I interest you in going to Satay next time, when it gets warmer out?
You make tears come down my face. I will miss my beloved Shea, and hate seeing it half torn apart, a part of me grew up there.
The good part though is it probably gives a good view of Citi Field, which in all honestly looks way better than Shea ever did.
I can't wait to catch a game this year at the new digs, and make some new memories, with some ...overpriced tickets!
If you need a reason to cry, have a look at Shea now. It's half gutted. If they continue with this pace, at the end of January, nothing will be standing above ground anymore.
Mike, do U wanna go steak-ing during winter? The place is nice to walk around too, which we wouldn't be able to do if it's windy and stuff.
But yes, steak-ing is a good idea, winter or not.
Udo, that's great to hear that the stadium is looking good to go-it does look great from the outside. Now if we can only get a couple more guys who can actually hit the ball we'd be all set to rock out at Citi- (US taxpayer field).
for Mets fans: Last week, they tested the big screens in the new CitiField, and tonight, they test the floodlights. Apparently, both systems work well.
If that's standard linking, why doesn't it show up as a link?
--
I used this kind of html-language on the MiNY site before, but it wouldn't show up as a link either. Is that again a Mac specific problem on MiNY
Here's wishing the best for this holiday season to all the MiNYers.
Happy Festivus to you too Udo. Sorry for no HH listing for today. It's Christmas Eve after all and most of us (myself included) seem to have other plans for tonight. I'll probably put up a HH for the first Wednesday of 2009 (unless somebody beats me to it, hint hint)
MM...I'd give a half-hearted recommendation to Flickr. While it's an excellent way to organize your photos online, the upload times can be mind-numbing if you have loads of photos and they give you limited storage space to start.
I have 2, maybe 3 friends coming from out of town. Torn between going to an Angolan party ($30 per couple, food and drinks included until 4 a.m.) because I have taken 1 of them to something similar before, or doing a club thing, which 1 would love but not necessarily the other. A house party would be a compromise but alas, I live in a small studio. The kitchen is fully functional, though, so maybe I could hold a pre-party event or something.
Ram Jam is right around the corner, is LIFE OK for the after concert dinner? I was thinking about doing something afterwards, like going to Le Souk or something. We need ideas!
Thanks again to all those who came out. The place was more packed than it was the last time we were there, but we managed to get prime seating (well, most of us anyway) by the beer tap. We'll definitely make a return visit soon.
PS- I recommend the honey garlic BBQ wings. They were delicious and a bargain at only $5.
That reference never gets old. I have yet to see this movie.
Also, I once saw Goldie Hawn, in Rowan & Martin's Laugh-in, tell a joke that ended in "all the King's horses and all the King's men... had omelets!" I found it funny in the airhead-blonde sort of way. But yesterday I found out that humpty dumpty is actually an egg.
Thanks to everyone who showed up at Crocodile last night. I liked that place. They had free pizza and Trivia Night. Veselka was good too. Had the stuffed meat cabbage, egg noodles and potato pancakes. See you guys at the next one. -MM

they're still open
otherwise their ad in The Voice this week is kind of a waste -- they were closed the last time I tried to go there though... I definitely had nothing to do with the shot glass incident (I was out of the country at the time) but I'm sure the statute has run out by now
Mike:
I stopped wearing Lederhosen around age 12 or so. And I'm not sure, whether anyone wants to see me in those, although I'm carrying now the corresponding fitting beer belly.
Mara:
Yeah, von Steuben was a noble man (from somewhere what is now East Germany) and went through the higher echolon of the prussian army. For some reason or another he had to leave Europe and became famous here for introducing prussian military discipline and tactics to Washington's Continental Armee. Hence his importance to this country.
So that's what the parade is called? R those 2 words at least actual german? Or were they invented?
I guess it's just a commercial invention, then. If I do go, I'll look for Underberg.
Thanks to everyone who showed up last night. I like that place, they were even nice enough to give us free chicken wings.
Dinner was at some Thai restaurant in Chelsea.
The experiment today was only the first test run. Currently, they're only at 5 % of their capacity. The beam isn't focussed yet and the software needs to be "adjusted", too.
So, the real McCoy is going to be at the end of 2009 ... maybe.
Hi. Randomness.
I googled Hump Day because I honestly didn't know what it meant even after seeing it written so many times.
That smiley that goes "Ohmigod! No way!" is really funny.
You've been warned! I think tonight everyone should have their last dinner (fried chicken with corn on the cob and french fries for me, with a side of caesar salad). The earth could explode tomorrow.
You may want to cancel Happy Hour, because I won't be able to attend :-)
Apart from that, the experiments are going to wreck havoc like the Y2K bug on a Remington typewriter ...
I'm pretty sure I only used fahklempt as an adjective in my post.
Heineken doesn't change w/ conjugation and its meaning can be derived from context. It's good for one-word sentences like the ones below:
Heineken! (Come on)
Heineken! (Let's go)
Heineken! (Do it)
Heineken! (Run)
It's also a very meaningful expression of joy:
Heineken! (Awesome)
Heineken! (Beautiful)
Heineken! (At last)
Heineken! (I love it)
For bad stuff, use fahklempt:
Fahklempt! (Damn it)
Fahklempt! (Screw you)
Fahklempt! (Bummer)
Not verklemmt, Udo, it's really fahklempt. If I'm not mistaken, it's a word that can be used in every sense, to mean anything, though it's usually negative. Meaning derived from context.
Another word I hope will attain the same status is heineken, except I seem to be the only one who uses it to signify things other than beer. And whereas fahklempt is an adjective, I use heineken as a verb. It's a great word. :)

Happy Hour last night
Thanks to everyone who showed up last night. Dinner at "Beyond" was good too. I'm hosting next week's happy hour as well, you guys got me for two straight weeks, you lucky people!
Reply by Ken at 09/03/08 8:19:49 --
HH at FBP was GREAT!
[even though we had neither Mara nor Udo] had to wait a bit to get the back room, but we didn't reach critical mass for an hour or so anyway -- much bigger turnout than expected, including a few folks we haven't seen for a while (some for QUITE a while)
Thanks to everyone who joined us at the Frying Pan last night. Special honors go to co-host Rose for managing to hold our section of the upper deck until the event officially commenced.
See you at the next happy hour (whichever one that is to be determined).

New Happy Hour venue
As mentioned in an earlier post, I was looking into hosting in a different venue for 8/20. It's now:
Bar 297
297 10th Avenue Freezout (27th)
New York, NY 10001
On an impulse, I bought 2 tix to some NY scratch and win thing, 2 dollars each.
I scratched a 4 dollar prize. Have yet to redeem it and dunno if taxes apply.

Time to make the donuts
Thanks to everyone who came out to the Coop last night. The rain held off just long enough for us to stay outdoors. We'll definitely make a habit of going to this place more often.
What do you do, if a restaurant dies?
Throwing a party to honour it?
Wasn't that the one where we used to have your birthday outings? That's really sad, it was a nice place.
Cafe Mozart: R.I.P. One of my favorite venues in NYC is now dead, gone, it has ceased to exist, it has met its maker, it is an ex-restaurant, it is a non-restaurant, it is not pining for the fjords.
My family and I walked over this morning and saw that not only was it closed but the inside gutted!
One hour and counting before I see one of my musical idols (Vince Clarke) in concert. Can't believe they're back together after such a long hiatus. Now if only Vince would reunite with his first band (Depeche Mode) and do a "Speak and Spell" tour.
In case you don't remember who Yaz (Yazoo) were, here's a video of their biggest hit...
OK, this is going to be an issue. I want to see it, but opening weekend is no good (have plans, don't care for the long lines). IMAX screenings at Lincoln/Upper West Side, are limited, and they're all sold out out out til early next week. So I think I'm going to see a regular screening early next week and then see it on IMAX later on if it's worth it.

This week in MiNY
There's some wierdness with the e-mail version of the newsletter this week. This is what Pradip sent out today:
---
The Official MEETinNewYork newsletter [07/07/08]
What an excellent finale to Euro 2008. Congratulations to Spain for a brilliant effort. About time their national squad won a major tournament (been over 40 years since the last one). Now lets see if they can finally win the World Cup (or an Olympic Gold medal in Beijing).
PS- Spain fans are a really, really festive bunch. I was so giddy about the victory I even tapped my feet a bit when they started playing "Macarena" in the background (never heard this song in an Irish bar before and NO, I didn't do the dance either, just tapped my foot and attempted to sing along with the chorus).
PPS- Sorry Udo. The Germans did put forth a valiant effort in defeat though, which made the match more exciting and Spain's victory more satisfying.
Mike, I saw it w/ Lisa on opening nite. There were lots of applause and screaming, Lisa herself was very vocal during the fight scenes. The romance makes the movie slow a bit.
So far, the Netherlands and Spain are by far the best two teams in the Cup. Too bad, they won't meet in the finals. On a patriotic note, it's probably good, that they won't meet in the finals. Hope is always the last to die :-)
Yes, it is my last days, but I have to be on my best behavior, so I don't burn any bridges..I managed to get next Tuesday aftenoon off, though - who could miss a world cup rematch!!!
Rose chickened out today ... didn't show up at Nevada Smith!
And as long as that is the only loss, I'm fine. We'll see in the end who holds the cup. Certainly not Croatia.

I know the feeling too well
When John Terry slipped on his penalty kick and missed an empty net which had he hit it would've kept the Champions League trophy away from the grubby hands of Man United.
Thanks to everyone who came out last night for pigs feet. Hakata Tonton's a place I definitely want to go to again....so many delicious dishes, so little time. Special thanks to "mystery guest" Mimi for helping us navigate the vast menu. Pictures and writeup will be posted by me soon.

Bryant Park Movie Screening
One of my favorite movies ever "Hud", is screening at Bryant Park on Monday, June 30. Highly recommended, 5 out of 5 stars, two thumbs up, etc. etc. Should I or shouldn't I host? I've seen the movie a few times already and I just had a screening of it recently at my place....

Live from the Apple store
Thanks for that bit of info Ken, I'll look into it. I want to go down there Thursday since I've got other plans this weekend...and I'm off this week. Figured this would be a nice day trip. Weather is supposed to be nice.
Today's workout:
Really, really don't wanna be indoors, so will check a bike rental place near Sunnyside, right after the Queens bridge. Hopefully the bike won't be too embarrassed by me.
not me, but I did get a postcard with a discount offer from the Trop recently and was thinking of going down, check Tropicana.net special offer TCARD10 if you're planning to stay the night...
...and glad to be typing this from home and not my office :-)
Anyone off this Thursday? I'm seriously considering heading to Atlantic City for the day and I may need a gambling partner (or two). We can laze around on the beach (and have drinks at the beach bar in front of Caesars), goof off at the Steel Pier, lunch at Hooters and have dinner at the Ballys Wild West Buffet....oh and maybe play a slot machine or two.
Thanks to everyone who showed up tonight. I played my very first scrabble game (got my @ss kicked) and some foosball. Dinner was fun afterwards. Very educational, thanks for the new terminology.
I am undecided about HH because I must travel extensively tonight. I must be at the remote, barely mapped location of New Jersey. Really want to go drinking, shoot some pool and kick some a$$ at foosball (sp?), and really wanna go try the pigs feet place!
Loyal Subjects, I've been sick for the past few days. In case I can't make it tomorrow, I'll have to assign a backup. But as of now (knock on wood), I'm feelin' alright, so I should be at Fat Cat on time, but probably not as personable and fun loving as usual. Oh yeah, if your'e going to call, call before 6:30, there's no phone signal in the basement
-MM
I just made meself chuckle at my desk.
U know the "Brush w/ greatness" thread? What if we had a "Brush w/ Oh, No!" thread?
I think I'd post everyday and it'd say: "Monday: I came to work." And so on and so forth und so weiter.
The event host/guide knew one thing or two about the craps table. I made 18 dollars in the short time that we played, like 4 minutes. He made twice as much. Also tried the slots for the 1st time--lost 15 dollars.
No time for shows, though. We walked on the boardwalk, saw the inside of several casinos, went to the Borgata casino, which I loved. Definitely want to go back.
Foxy here spent 4/20 in bed, recovering from a day and most of the night in Atlantic City. Ppl, not a bad place to visit after all. Never wanted to go to Vegas but after this, that's all I wanna do!
Who wants to come to Vegas w/ Foxy? :)
30 years ago, I would be the first to respond to this, but I've mellowed in my old age and haven't touched it in about 20 years.
besides I'm KJing a fund raiser tonight from 6:30 to 10:30, then going to a local bar for more karaoke till about 3am.
I intend to get up just long enough to attend mass tomorrow morning, have brunch and then probably go back to bed.
Thanks to everyone who showed up last night at Fat Black Jazz. The next event is on May 21, the Wednesday before Memorial Day weekend. See you then. -MM
w/ the last replies... that Foxy Brown thing got me laughing aloud. I'm back in the States, ppl! When's the next hiking event? The next RAM gig? C'mon, put'em up!
Double mistake in one word ... The single p I didn't know about, but I thought "ph" vs "f" is a matter of personal preference, like in "photo" and "foto" (where I usualy prefer the old-fashioned way). Oh well, sic transit gloria mundi!
Morning, around 10. Very hot and me very lazy. In Angola now. Forgot 92% of all English I knew. St. Patrick uncelebrated here--not much Irish influence.
Mara,
I was actually counting down to RAM's gig, but then I realized that the gig is on π-day. π = pi = 3.1415....Just separate the digits as needed :-)
Well, 3/14 is one day. In countries where they use DD/MM/YY format like Germany, it's on July 22 because 22/7 is an ancient approx. of π.
I didn't really know what your countdown was for. So it's for π? What on earth is π?
Can I eat it? Would it date me?
It's 4:14. I hope those boys R well rehearsed by now or I'll want my money back.
