POST EVENT FEEDBACK >>

Added By Sue On: 01/18/05
10 guests joined Sue Vitnell, Founder of Newcomers Network on the day. They included migrants from Canada, United States of America and the United Kingdom, International Students from South Korea, Australian Repatriates that had returned from France, United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, and a person who moved for work reasons from Adelaide South Australia Presentation Summary Whilst there were no plans to provide an official presentation, Sue Vitnell summarised the creation of Newcomers Network and the events planned for the year. We then went around the table and briefly heard from each person where they had come from before arriving in Melbourne. Everyone had been in Melbourne for less than three years (this time around). At 4pm, everyone ordered some refreshments and then chatted in small groups. This was a purely social event designed to share stories and encourage people to meet other people who have moved to Melbourne and it will be a regular event on the Second Sunday of each month in 2005. Evaluation Results The following questions were forwarded to guests after the event. Three guests responded with the following answers: 1. What was your main reason for coming along to this event? (meet people, meet other newcomers, learn more about Melbourne etc) Meet people, preferably newcomers as well To meet people and to be part of the event in Fed Sq To meet people 2. Did you find that talking as a group and listening to each person's story was helpful or would you have preferred just to mix with a small group of other guests in a more casual social way? I like the format the way it was...helps one determine who might be compatible to hang out with Perhaps a more casual way of mixing in groups I think it was good that we got to hear other people's stories, but I would have preferred mixing in small groups... 3. If the next event attracts more guests, would you like to help another table of guests go through the same story sharing process? Yes, I would love to be involved in addressing the group. I think perhaps speaking with people more informally would be preferable No 4. What was the best part of this event for you? It gave me genuine happiness to listen to other people's stories. The difficulties of adapting to the Australian way of life faced by others were remarkably similar to those faced by myself. Meeting new people and generally socializing Getting to meet new people, in a social environment... 5. Do you have any other thoughts or suggestions? No No, I think its a good start I think when meeting, it would be handy if the person 'organising' the event is wearing or carrying something unusual that stands out in a crowd!
