A Peachy Time in ATLANTA Written By Carmel 03/19/2006 click for full size Tuesday, March 14, 2006 9:15 a.m. I arrive in Atlanta with Carmel. My first picture is taken at the airport’s Visitor Information Booth, where a nice volunteer helped me pose for my photo. 3:45 p.m. I go on my first disaster response, to provide assistance to disaster clients at a multi-family fire in Cobb County. It is past 8 p.m. when we finish, so Carmel called Alayna to let her know that she’d be dropping me off the next day instead of tonight. Wednesday, March 15, 2006 12:30 p.m. During lunch break, I finally get to meet Alayna, who whisked me off for some city sightseeing. Thursday, March 16, 2006 7:30 p.m. I MEET many new MEETinATLANTA friends at the Dinner with MiDC's Carmel and spIKEy. Noche would not sit our large group together, so we had dinner at Fontaine’s instead. It was followed by drinks at Moe’s and Joe’s, complete with my first mustard shot (thanks to Jason for the encouragement!) For the full story, check out the event news. Friday, March 17, 2006 11:30 a.m. I went with Carmel on a personal service learning visit to the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site. I visited the graves of Dr. King and Mrs. Coretta Scott King. I visited Ebenezer Baptist Church where Rev. King co-pastored with his father and where Mrs. Coretta Scott King was laid in state. I also visited the house where Dr. King was born. The trip to the King Center was very educational and would highly recommend it next time you visit Atlanta. We were there for close to four hours. There are more pictures from Carmel’s camera here. 2:30 p.m. I visit the beautiful Centennial Olympic Park, a lasting legacy to the 1996 Summer Olympic Games hosted by Atlanta. Jen met up with us and helped me take many awesome pictures. Chris also met up with us after he got out of work but I didn’t take any pictures with him. The newly opened Georgia Aquarium is right in front of Centennial Olympic Park, though I did not get a chance to visit it this time. From the park, we drove past the Georgia Dome. Saturday, March 18, 2006 On Friday, I stayed overnight in McDonough, GA (suburb south of Atlanta) with Carmel, at the home of Nick, and David-Matthew. I got to meet Lucy, a very rambunctious West Highland Terrier. The following day, Nick and Carmel took me to Piedmont Park while David-Matthew went to work. Piedmont Park is full of history and we took a lot of pictures there on what turned out to be an impromptu "Photo Trek". Afterwards, we walked by the home of Margaret Mitchell, author of "Gone With The Wind." We also walked past the Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank and stopped by the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. I had a great time in Atlanta, seeing the sights and MEETing new friends. I hope I can visit again soon! Some more pictures of my Atlanta trip are here. More Photos
