Event Hosted By spIKEY Start slideshow sPIKEY appears on the TODAY SHOW:-) Written By spIKEY 01/06/2006 click for full size Around 8 a.m. on Thursday morning, January 5, 2006, Carmel, Cara and I did something only New York City tourists do: stand outside the NBC Studios at Rockefeller Plaza as the “Today” show was being taped. Despite the frigid temperature, the girls were excited at the prospect of me getting on camera with some guy named Al who does the weather. When we got there, there wasn’t much of a crowd and the girls and I were able to get a spot on the rail barrier. The three of us got our picture taken by an official NBC photographer. Nothing exciting happened in that first half hour (other than, I suppose, when the girls made me take a picture with the NYPD cop, over whom they were drooling). There was a camera crew outside that took some footage of the people outside the studio, and the crowd would wave their posters and such in front of the camera. Since we didn’t have a poster, the girls made me jump up and dance in front of the camera instead. The cameraman paid lots of attention to me; whenever he could pan the crowd, I was always included. Daddy Mikey was right: it is my unusual appearance that gets me attention! Then around twenty-five past the hour, the cameraman informed us that some of the stars of the show were coming out, and the crowd got very excited. Katie Couric and David Gregory stood off to the side of us for a better camera angle, since the girls and I were right behind one of the mounted speakers. So Cara went towards the back of the crowd that stood behind Katie Couric and David Gregory, and hoisted me up. On camera, I looked like I was dancing on top of Katie Couric’s head! When NBC switched to the local affiliates for the local news and weather, the cameraman pointed us out to David Gregory, who then came over and asked the girls "about the doll." (Note: I’m not a 'doll.' I'm obviously an action figure) They told him that I was the mascot for a social group, and mentioned the MEETin web site on air. I wondered how many of my MEETin friends got to see me on TV? It was very, very exciting for me and the girls that I got a lot of media attention that morning. Cara	Joel you are fabulous!! I cannot tell you all how much of a thrill this was!! I am sooooo happy we were able to make it happen! Oh, and I watched the Today Show again today to get that anchor's name, it's David Gregory. Matt Lauer apparently is recovering from wrist surgery. I was so sad to hug and kiss my little godson goodbye tonight in the cab when I got home. Stay tuned for more photos on spIKEY's NYC adventures!
