Feline Conservation Center Written By Hilary 09/17/2006 click for full size
Yesterday a few MeetinLAers headed out to Lancaster to Frank's house where there were a bevy of people chowing down on many yummy potluck dishes. This event was also open to Sierra Club and ODC members.
From there we carpooled all the way out to Rosamond (Kern County) to visit the Feline Conservation Center (Exotic Feline Breeding Compound) dedicated to the preservation of endangered felines. I didn't really know what to expect...were they in open spaces? Were they tame? Upon arriving I was slightly disappointed that the cats were all in fenced pens, but I was quick to realize that it was safer for all concerned, the cats included, that they were kept this way. Actually, most of their spaces were pretty big and most of them were made to look like the cat's natural habitats. Some did not act friendly, but most of them were playing and seemed pretty happy, so it made me feel that they were being well taken care of. Some of my faves were Caeser, the magnificient tiger, Roby, the black Leopard who likes to ham it up, the two juvenal Noth Chinese Leopards, LiMing & Yanna who could play for hours and the 2 newest arrivals Aztec & Maya, Jaguarundis' that less resemble cats as they do ferrets. This was a very special day and well worth the drive. Here is their website for more info and photos Check out the "Cats" link for photos and mpegs. More Photos
