The Wrestler - Viewed 4068 Times
The Wrestler is a "deeply affecting film" that stars Mickey Rourke as Randy "The Ram" Robinson, a pro wrestler who has gone from the big-time spotlight and the fame that comes with it to trying to get by working small independent shows while the effects of 20 years of work and drug use/abuse slowly tears him apart, all while trying to settle down with a stripper he's attracted to and attempting to reconnecct with the daughter he abandoned...until the ring calls him back for one final match.
From a wrestling standpoint, Aronofsky clearly did his homework. The matches are very well choreographed, a lot of actual and former wrestlers are featured throughout the film, many of the scenes were filmed at actual wrestling events, and it's very graphic in depicting just how far wrestlers will go and injure themselves to put on a good show for the fans. Rourke plays The Ram very well and deserves all the awards and praise he's receiving, and everything in the film goes great right up until the ending...when they pull a "Sopranos Finale". That brings it down just a little bit but not enough to not make me call this THE best film of 2008 and the best film I have seen in a long time. Go out of your way to see it.
I personally give it a 9.5 but since you can't do fractions here I'll be generous and round up to...

Not impressed
As a longtime wrestling fan I was very disapointed. There is so much more they could have done with this story. Should have had better guest appearances of wrestlers. Should have had better action for in ring spots. And they cut the last scene at least 10 seconds short. Honestly I thought the story had great potential, but it ended up being a very weak story. I am very glad I didn't buy into the hype and see this in the theatre.
Watching a documentary of Terry Funk, Mick Foley, or Rick Flair would have been ten times more interesting.

The Wrestler
Racy, but interesting drama with all the elements of a grat movie. Not Rocky in the rah, rah, rah sense but very realistic and gruesome like the passion of the christ. Love the cast, humor, action and club scenes.
