First Friday Gallery Hop 08/02/2008
The group met up at the usual spot on the corner of King and Nuuanu right in front of the auction place. We were honored to have four "first timers" joining us along with a "blast from the past", Sam.

As we headed up Nuuanu to our first stop Sako joined along the way followed by Ming, Gabby and Grip. We entered the first gallery - Louis Pohl on the corner of Hotel Street. They had some interesting oriental pieces. The artists mustn't be doing very well - gone were the cheese and smoked salmon that we usually see there... The group stayed here a little longer to partake in getting their rocks read by the psychic.

Next up was Marks Garage. They had some good art along with some sweet tasting watermelon. We took our main group photo there then proceeded to head over to Kim Taylor Reese's place. We did the usual stop at the corner gallery and some of us enjoyed their red wine. At this point we began to pick up the pace as some folks wanted to head over to the Hawaii State Art Museum for an event that started at 7:30 and others were ready to eat and drink. Several other members joined us at the gallery at the top of Nuuanu including Crystal, Karen and Brianna. We visited three more galleries and then the antique shop.

Upon leaving HASR Wine Company the group split - half heading for the museum and the other half going to Bar 35. As usual Bar 35 was packed and we met up with five more members there including Dean, Kina and Joe. After a drink or two a few of us left for the museum to meet up with the other half of the group. They were enjoying some terrific music on the lawn by Makana. The place was packed and they had some fantastic aerial performances by the aerial ballet group, Samadhi Hawaii while using white ribbons & rings hanging from the monkeypod trees. We were really enjoying this, up until the point where someone pulled the fire alarm and they had to evacuate the Hawaii State Art Museum. The building was evacuated, however, the fire department allowed the entertainment and people to continue staying on the lawn.

We then proceeded over to the Little Village to have some terrific Chinese food, family style. While waiting for our table we were able to visit one last gallery across the street and we also ran into David and Regina. As usual, dinner was awesome and I think it ended up being a 10-course meal with very little left over. We left the restaurant by about 10 or so and the group did one more split as some were in the mood for karaoke and some just wanted to be in the crowd. So singing David and also the Captain of Lost led the karaoke group to the "other" side of Hotel St., places that no one has ever dared venture to. They tried finding a karaoke place at the Gold Gate Bar and the other one next to it. I'd describe it but I was outside with the others who were afraid to enter the place. It seems the karaoke group wanted to stay there, so the rest of the other group went back to Bar 35 to enjoy another drink with the crowd to end the night before heading home. All in all Mari and I had a terrific evening with the group and we would like to thank everyone who came out!

Fedoras, Firetrucks, and Food
Who could ask for anything more? Makana, the musician at the State Art Gallery was amazing. Thanks to Gary's connections we were saved from starvation and treated to a feast. Then "The Gold Gate Bar" was an experience that will never be forgotten complete with Old men and Irish music from a jukebox, passed out man/woman/??, and Sako's fantastic voice. Thanks all for the great time.

Golden Gate Bar
The name didn't do the place justice. Everything was definitely golden about it... the cost, the audience (the average age was 70), the never-ending tracks of Irish drinking music.. but eventually an hour later we were able to do karaoke and we had sooo much fun! The Chinese place was awesome, the food kept coming and coming, and we kept eating and eating, even though we were all full by the 10th dish. And Gary just seemed to have all the connections, so we got in really fast even though there were crowds of people waiting to sit down.

The Golden Nugget Bar was da bomb! Cheap drinks...I bought everyone a round of drinks including a pitcher all for $14!!! where else can you get a deal like that. This is my new fave bar. Not to mention we endedup singing the night until 1 am at that place. I give this place a FIVE stars.
