Yummie Wines and Food! Written By Ernst 02/26/2007 click for full size
More than six months had passed since the previous wine tasting. Time for more, and boy did we get it!
We started the evening with a wonderful Vinho Verde (Portugal) from the vineyard of Jose and Amelia. A wonderfully refreshing, lightly sparkling wine that was appreciated by all. It was paired by tasty little shrimp cakes? (cookies? pastries?, what do you call those in English?) A very good start of the evening. After that we had a nice California White wine from Beringer vineyards brought by Diana and Matt. This was paored with a selection of sweet fruits and dades. A good combination, the wine's initial sweet nose was nicely matched by the sweetness of the fruits and dades. The third wine of the evening was my own; also a white wine, a Sportoletti Grechetto from Assissi (Italy) paired with a Quiche Lorraine. After this we moved to a bit more color in our wines. The rosé wine from Saint Roche (organic, from France) and the Lindemans Padthaway Shiraz (from Australia) brought by Nicola and Geoff did the trick. To go with it they prepared two varieties of pizza which worked very good. Nice pizza, nice wines, excellent combination. Next up was the Casillero del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon (from Chili) brought by Rogelio. This wine combined very well with the green olives that were paired with it: both quite heavily flavoured, but as a combination nicely in balance. The last wine of the evening was a very, very good Port wine from Portugal with Portugese easter cake and Abbey cheese from Belgium.Yum! Having gone through all our wines, some of us still did not have enough and found some consolation in a glass of grappa (from Abbruzzo, Italy) or marc (from Savoie, France.) Both drinks are wine related (they are distilled from the leftover grape skins and stalks after wine pressing) and therefore this was still in the spirit of the evening. I would like to thank everybody for bringing the food and the wines and the nice company. See you at the next tasting? Cheers! More Photos
