Mobius Band Ignites Written By adam 10/14/2007 click for full size
Well, it was an adventure. First there was the trek down to Broadway where miracles do happen and we found a parking space nearly in front of Sputnik. Linda and I ordered some dinner while listening to The Kinks. Funny - we'd just been talking about The Kinks in the car, how they had to change the line in Lola from "Coca Cola" to "Cherry Cola." Apparently the BBC demanded the change because they didn't want anything commercial in the song. Fortunately we now hear the original version most of the time.
Anyway, there we were with the hip, downtown crowd, eating our vietnamese noodles (me) and sandwich (Linda). I decided to check my cellphone for any last minute surprises so I went outside and there it was - a msg from Ben (from The Mobius Band). He had been in the ER the night before - too much water, elevation, lack of potassium, something or other, they weren't sure. They were in Albuquerque. They weren't coming. We were on our own. I called everyone who had shown any interest in coming (fortunately, not too many people - but an example of when having people's phone numbers came in quite handy). To her credit, Catherine still came and joined us and introduced us to Sputnik's sweet potato fries. We hung out, and eventually got out of there. Walked next door to learn that the show was still a go without Mobius Band, but not till later. So off we went for a wander about. Only a little ways up Broadway there was a big screen TV. Showing the Rockies game. Catherine said "look, the rockies" (quite a perceptive woman, that Catherine). In we went (well, I needed a bit more leg-stretching, so i wandered up a few blocks to take in the sights and sounds of the city before beating a hasty retreat). We sat at the bar and watched the game and the slowly gathering crowd. I gradually noticed a pattern - way more guys than girls in this here place. I took a bit of a look around to see what the place was like and there were 5-6 guys on the dance floor. Hmmm. Interesting. More guys out back smoking in the smoking room. Hmmm. Came back to my seat and we watched some more. More guys came in. Then a couple of women. But they were making out. I see. Then an occasional woman who "walked like a woman, but talked like a man." The continuity continued. We stayed through the 9th inning, till the Rox blew the save (but apparently walked away with the win anyway), and the crowd swelled and the noise groaned. We were sated. The end of a fun night. New experiences. Maybe next time I'll get up and dance... p.s. Ben is doing OK, and the band are on their way to their next tour location (S.D.). More Photos
