MiDC takes a hike...in Shenandoah Written By Rob 09/24/2006 click for full size
On a really crisp cool Sunday in mid-September, around 15 MiDCers went out for a nice short 12.5 mile hike out in Shenandoah National Park. We left DC around 10:00 AM hoping to get to the park around noon. It was a great ride out there. We saw lots of great scenery and gas for $1.97. What more could you ask for? We tried to stop at Sunnyside Farms Famous Rest Stop which used to be at the corner of 211 and 522 in Sperryville as is tradition for hiking in Shenandoah, but Sunnyside had other plans. They packed up and left the area when they heard we were coming.
We decided to head on over to the Emporium instead. The Emporium was an even better rest stop...because they were open! Finally reaching the hiking trail around noon, we met Diana and Dave C. at the trail head of Knob Mountain/Jeremy's Run Loop's around 12:30 where we started hiking. First we hiked up Knob Mountain and saw some breathtaking views. At the top, we stopped for a lunch and a well deserved break. We then descended down the mountain to Jeremy's Run. Nobody really knew who Jeremy was, but he sure liked crossing the water lot. All together we had 14 stream crossings, most of which we were successful at keeping ourselves dry. The others were a little more fun. The water was cool, clear and refreshing. We hiked on well into the late afternoon and early evening. And on. And on. We crossed paths with a nice man and his wife who were camping in the area toward what we thought was the end of the trail. We asked them how much farther. Three more miles they replied. Boy, we were way off. Those were the longest three miles. We finally reached the end at around dusk. I never thought we'd be so excited to see a parking lot. More Photos

great group! Thanks Diana and Rob! For coordinating a challenging hike, keeping us on task so we made it out before dark, and for not leaving me behind even though I had no business being there ;-) Thanks also to all the folks who encouraged me - it would've been awful without so many folks to distract me from the burn! |

Good workout Thanks for setting up this great hike guys. It was surprisingly long but well worth it. To anyone taking this hike in the future the only recommendation I would make is to try to start earlier and hike the whole Knob Mountain before lunch and stop to eat at the first pool or at the waterfall at the beginning of Jeremy's run. While we did get some good views through the trees on the mountain trail the actual summit was fairly closed in. That's a minor point though, overall it was a great experience. |

Excellent hike I highly recommend it. A lot of fun, and a lot tougher than I expected (I like challenging hikes). We should definitely hike in the park again the near future. |
