Trivia & Scavenger Hunt IV: National Mall Invasion
Written By W. Dana 04/11/2006

On a gloriously sunny day, nearly 100 restless MEETinDC members and friends gathered on the National Mall to participate in the fourth round of the popular Trivia & Scavenger Hunt event series. After organizing into 16 teams of five or six, the race was on to score the most points by scouring over 150 acres packed with museums, monuments, and thousands of other visitors.

Teams used creative strategies in their attempt to grab first place. Moose & Squirrel's secret weapon was to deploy a single team member to research questions while the other five stayed together to capture photo points. This appeared to work well and they would have claimed first place if their communication was a little better. Unfortunately they missed two questions because the answers were very close, but incorrect.

The loud and proud Damn Tourists piled into cabs to get them around the vast expanse of the Mall. While this helped them get to many more questions than other teams, in their rush they neglected to read some questions carefully, losing 10 points by not completely answering them.

While some of the established teams spent considerable time preparing for this event, many new teams gave impressive performances, even after just meeting each other for the first time. The race was tight for the middle tier, where only four points separated third place from eighth and three teams tied with 37 points each.

But after missing first place by only one point twice in a row, Bayside came through to take first place yet again, despite losing one point for turning in their questions one minute late. They won with the narrowest of margins; can they repeat their success again? Stay tuned for Trivia & Scavenger Hunt V, coming to the National Zoo this fall!

Impressed
Considering I am the one that was making Bayside's cocktails for them Saturday night, I am very impressed that they a) made it to the Scavenger Hunt in the first place, and b) ended up winning it. Either I am not a very good bartender, or they are all rock stars! (They must be rock stars :-)

Joel
first place from start to finish..
..it was obvious as 3/5 of our team went to bed at 5am that we were going to win..nothing like running your arse from monument to monument in the nick of time. And our pockets are still heavy(no cabs baby!, sorry Damn Tourists). Glad i was convinced at the 11th hour for this awesome day, Dana you amaze me. 3JAAWIAB, where did you go? Bayside number one, of course...

Diana
Well met Bayside
But Moose & Squirrel's moment will surely be at the Zoo . . . .

Darren
A hard one
I didn't think we won, as you saw we didn't really do any bragging at the end so we thought we had maybe enough for third. This was a tuff one, I think your event has made me realise that I need bigger shoes, my feet swelled up with all the run/walking. Hopefully we can bring it all together for the Zoo, and maybe there will be another D+J ScavengerHunt in the Future???........................

Ruthie
Obey Butterstick
Team Butterstick is proud that we did it as a TEAM, and on FOOT, and ON TIME! Many many thanks to Dana for organizing such a kickass event.

Jon
Every last second
Thank you Dana for another fantastic trivia scavenger hunt! It took Darren and I days to put together a scavenger hunt encompassing a single museum so I don't know how you manage to cover the entire mall. Very good (sometimes sneaky) questions. Thanks to my Bayside teammates who came out despite lack of sleep and late notice and to Moose and Squirrel and all the other teams who left us absolutely no margin of error. See you at the Zoo.

Dana
haha, we beat the Damn Tourists!
and only used our legs for transportation. Thank you Yaneev, Tonet, Tyson, Ken, and Cuong for being an adept and fun team. And thanks Yaneev for listening to NPR and knowing where to find those pianos! 8th place, baby!!!!

Siwei
Bayside...
Planning, execution, and attention to details...and a Jewish dude from New York... These are all important but... Don't underestimate the spiritual power of Chairman Mao's posters... The first time I saw it, I was betting on you to win...

Joshİ
WE WERE ROBBED!!!
ROBBED, I SAY!!! Ok, that's all the complaining I'm gonna do. This was probably the toughest rounds of questions so far, and we still did VERY well. MOOSE & SQUIRREL!!! MOOSE & SQUIRREL!!! See yall at the ZOO!!!

Mas
Great fun!
Thanks for organizing such a great event! In the fall, Strudel-ific will dominate! (I'm already in training....)

Jeffrey

Kerry
Thank YOU, Dana!
This was, again, an absolutely incredible experience. It's such a great way to learn, meet new folks, act crazy in public, and get some exercise (I'm still sore two days later!). Thank you, Dana, for organizing this fantastic hunt--and for doing it again in the fall. Scavenger Hunt V, here I come!

W. Dana
Thanks everyone!
I was really impressed with how close many of the scores were this time around. Thanks to everyone who came out to make this the largest and most successful Trivia & Scavenger Hunt to date. Get your teams ready for round 5, back to the National Zoo this fall!
