WHITE OAK CANYON HIKE

WRITTEN BY JIM BUTZ (THANKS JIM)

Another fine trip to the Shenandoah Mountains started with a meeting at the Vienna Metro where we took a quick count and figured out who was going with whom. Then it was off for the hike. Well, since there is no cell service out there, we decided to regroup at Thornton Grill (or is it Fortune Grill?) to make sure we had everyone and nobody got lost. We did have a glitch or two getting to the trail, including one time when Amy had to try to figure out which of the three dirt roads Mitch took even though he seemed to just be right in front of us. Why does the dirt settle so fast when you are using it to help you follow someone? Nevertheless, made it to the trail we did and off on the hike we went. We made a short stop at the lower falls on the way up where Rob cooled off and the several of us just rested. After several more rest stops on the way up, we stopped for lunch at the upper falls. While the sign just before these falls says that it is half way up (which caused a few people to decide that they had gone far enough) it seems like it is probably closer to 90% of the way to the top. After a longer rest break, some food, and another regrouping, we headed back down the trail. The hike down was easier than the one up (big surprise) but it still seemed long and we had to be more careful. We made another stop at the lower falls for more swimming then we headed off for dinner. At the Griffin Tavern we had very good food (maybe we were just extremely hungry after the hike) served by a grumpy waitress. I guess having 14 people drop in at once was more than such a small place was anticipating. However, the food was good, the company was great, and the hike gave everyone an excuse to indulge a little bit. Max was the only one who felt that he could have chocolate pie for dinner though. After dinner, we headed back to the Metro so that people could head home and start stretching out those sore muscles.
