Written By Brooke 04/02/2008 click for full size The Roman god Bacchus, the god of wine and irrational revelry, was said to preside over ecstatic rites (rites that sometimes included sacrifice and the eating of raw flesh!) that drove the participants into another plane of perception, as they became possessed by the diety. The adjectives Bacchanalian and Bacchic came to describe any exhuberant, drunken revelry. Now we didn't eat any raw flesh, we didn't transcend reality, and at least I don't think anyone became possessed, but we sure did have a good time! --We sacrificed tons of little carbohydrate appetizers while sipping on a delicious variety of wines that helped add to the general irational revelry and merriment of the night. I believe Bacchus was smiling upon us! Admittedly, I don't know much about wine other than the fact that I like it! But being a wine connoisseur wasn't required in order to attend and enjoy this wonderfully cozy and informal evening. (.......come to think of it, did any of us that were there actually know anything legitimate about wine??) It was wonderful to meet some new members, while also getting to know older members more intimately. The different wines, great company, laughter, cozy environment and wonderful conversation made for an unforgettable night, that didn't fully conclude until 5am! The evening was also educational- In addition to learning about each other, we also learned that, contrary to what pop culture tells us, putting your ear up to a cup doesn't allow you to hear conversations through closed doors! Or does it, John......? :) Thanks to everyone for coming out and creating such a relaxing and joyful evening, and a special thanks to Brijette for opening up her home to all of us.
