The Science of Fear Written By John 10/22/2008 click for full size
Halloween came early for those of us who attended the Goosebumps: Science of Fear exhibit at the Museum of Science. However, we didn’t get any candy and, truthfully, there were not that many frights.
We all learned that none of us have Alektraphobia (fear of chickens) or Aurophobia (fear of gold). Yes, who would have a fear of gold? was the question on our minds too! There were four fear challenges. One was fear of animals where you put your hand in a darkened chamber to feel if the creature was in there or in the top chamber. The creatures were a snake, cockroaches or scorpion. We all lived although Ray started acting a little woozy by the end of the day. There was fear of noises (Helena was not affected so she was either brave or hard of hearing) and fear of electric shock (everyone got zapped but it was low voltage). Then there was fear of falling. You got strapped on an upright platform like Frankenstein’s monster and then it suddenly fell backwards. A camera recorded your reaction and you could watch it a few minutes later. Some people made expressions and others were just stoic. And there was another interactive exhibit where went into a room with a large projection screen and tried to pick fruit from a tree and get out before the cougar noticed you and ate you. Let’s just say the cougar ate well that day. The rest of the exhibit had some interesting displays and videos. We struggled a bit trying to get the videos in English so we watched a little in Spanish. Tiene usted Miedo? We played a brainy dominoes game, could have colored some brains, made Rebekah’s heartbeat go sporadic when she was attached to the hand sensor and juggled amygdalas. Ok, the last part was made up. After the exhibit we got a bite to eat at the café downstairs and then many people went back into the museum to check out other exhibits. More Photos
