Favorite Music
it's all about the music and not the bands, but ...
currently:
**the arcade fire**(there are not enough adjectives in the language to describe how fuckin' awesome an album "funeral" is. the apotheosis of all that is wondrous and joyful in music. the sheer ecstasy of being alive distilled into song. ... *magic*.)
also spoon, blue october, kasabian, the decemberists, ashes from ashes, muse, alkaline trio, jimmy eat world.
perennial favorites: a perfect circle, tool, the burden brothers, evanescence, three days grace, sarah mclachlan, tori amos, green day, linkin park, loreena mckennitt, some classical (vivaldi, wagner, rimsky-korsakov).
more recent stuff: the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Metric and Ladytron. Placebo. the Silversun Pickups. the Thermals! Beirut! the National!

Favorite Books
last book i read (and liked!) was iain pears' "the dream of scipio".
it relates the intertwined stories of the fall of civilization as viewed by three men in different times - in the dying days of the roman empire, during the black death in the middle ages and after the fall of france in WW2.
epic in scope, philosophical in the questions it asks about the very concept and worthiness of civilization and powerfully tragic in its characters and story. and some most excellent writing to round it out.
think i liked this book?
currently, reading a book on paleontology & continental drift (yeah, geek!).
just started chuck palahniuk's "survivor".
and, halfway through jon krakauer's "under the banner of heaven".

Favorite TV Shows
my TV set passed away a year ago. RIP.
while it was alive, it dished out mucho PBS and a few assorted shows like the West Wing, B5, Keen Eddie and Judge Jud...uh, C-SPAN, yeah, that's it, C-SPAN. have you *watched* those House of Commons debates on C-SPAN? hands down, best damn reality shows/mud-slinging contests ever!
have to mention the Wonder Years, too. ancient, but, yeah, that was *amazing* stuff.
|
Favorite Movies
the usual too-many-to-list problem.
indie flicks. foreign flicks. everything from Before Sunrise and Amelie to the House of Sand and Fog and Requiem for a Dream.
and lately, i've just been devouring documentaries on just about *everything* - world events, social injustice, enviro-flicks, *everything*.
guilty secret? snuff films.

About Me
six billion people on this planet. i could have been a
subsistence farmer sweating over rice fields in india or
living in fear of the paramilitary groups in colombia or an
indoctrinated citizen in the eternal darkness that is north
korea.
but i'm not. the lottery of life, i guess. so, i make the
most of what's been given to me. and i am super thankful for
the rich life i have.
doesn't mean i don't indulge in the more mundane things ... like ... cursing the idiot drivers on the road, the idiots who run this country, and all the other idiots who're just downright idiotic (sense a theme here? :).
that said, i'll add that i'm fairly cheerful and that i usually have a smile on my face and sunshine in my eyes.
except when i'm grumpy from indigestion.

My Best MEETin event story ( please only fill in after you have been to an event )
not really a meetin favorite event story, but, apparently, through luck, fate or, umm, divine destiny, i'm austin meetin member# 666.
ok, ok, so i did wait for a few days while that counter crept slowly up just so i could write this. but the fact that it hit 6*6 in the wee hours of the summer solstice surely has some meaning?
can i get this number recorded for meetin posterity?

I first met Ash as I crashed his brunch in Austin Friday morning. He was full of smiles and made sure I met everyone. Ash is fun to hang with and so full of energy! I wish I could tap into his energy from Phoenix :) I'm glad he is on my list of Austin friends and hope to see him again either in Austin or Phoenix.
<-( Dwayne says ;-)
I was lucky to have met Ash during the '07 MeetIN Celebration in Austown! Y'all are lucky to have him as a Leader of your group because he's one active guy with tons of interests. I only wish I got the chance to spend more time with him but you all can do that for me! Thanks Ash for making me feel welcome during the Town Lake bike ride!
<-( Jennifer says ;-)
After "missing" Ash for about 8 months it was good to finally meet "the" famous Ash. And he's one cool character! Although I do think he's a bit of a Dark Chocolate Fondue Fiend... I enjoy his sense of humor and ability to have the most silly conversations while keeping a serious face. Kudo's to you!
<-( sharon says ;-)
Ash is one of those people who makes you feel comfortable immediately, and I always smile when I see him. He took me rock climbing for the first time and he was so supportive and sweet - it was a great time. Also, I've never known Ash to be on time to an event - EVER!
<-( Gena says ;-)
Ash DOES NOT LIKE HIS PICTURE TAKEN : D Lol. If you do catch him in a picture, he will be the man with his hand or hands in front of his face and behind that picture we are all laughing with him trying to talk Ash in to showing his face. He is very funny and great to talk with. Don’t ask him about his Spelling job ? LOL. He loves the outdoors. Fun to talk with and great to say hi too, just don’t take his picture what ever you do. Oh shhhh! One more thing, don’t bring him chocolate either and don’t let him smell it or get near it and make sure there are no camera’s around if this were to ever happen, he go’s banana’s. LOL.
<-( Tink says ;-)
I have met Ash twice, and from now on he will be a fixture at every single party I have for the rest of my life. No kidding, he has such an infectious enthusiasm for human interaction that simply watching him make the rounds in a room is entertainment by itself. I salute your zest for life, my new MEETin friend! Your taste in music is also quite keen...if only you'd wear muscle shirts to show off those rock-hard biceps...
<-( Kris says ;-)
Ash is probably the funniest person in MeetinAustin! He has a quick wit and awesome sense of humor (just read his profile and you'll get a sample). He is also one of those people that actually keep up on world current events and culture; so any conversation you have with him is going to be interesting. He's great PR for new member meetin events, doing his personal best to ensure new people meet everyone and are enjoying themselves. Just don't ask him to flex his arms...
<-( Mary Ann says ;-)
Okay, despite the fact that Ash doesn't imbibe, he is, by far, meetin's biggest party animal! I love this guy! If you haven't already met him, make it a point to do so.
<-( Mario says ;-)
I spent quality time with the Ashman this weekend sorting through big boxes of Katrina donations, and I can say with certainty that he is one cool mofo. Make it a point to go to his events, you won't regret it. But beware! Don't challenge "Iron Tum" Ash to an apple pie eating contest or you WILL get schooled. You have been warned.
<-( R. Mark says ;-)
Ash is Meetin's cultural attache' His events are eclectic and always interesting. Ash is a all round good guy-make it a point to meet him
<-( Glen says ;-)
Ash is an elusive target. He is everywhere. He is nowhere. Ash can only be seen in your peripheral vision. Blink and you'll miss him. Ash is at the party tonight, cycling up the highway tomorrow and volunteering the next day. Satellite surveillance spotted Ash on an archeological dig in Mexico, but confirmed eyewitness reports place him in Atlanta *the same day*. You can't keep up... don't even try. :-D
